2 students crushed between bus, truck

Two SSC examinees died yesterday afternoon when they were sandwiched between a bus and a truck at Kashidanga on the outskirts of the divisional city.

The dead are Mohammad Al-Amin, 14, and Manjur Rahman, 15, — students of Kashidanga High School.

Incensed, hundreds of locals set the two vehicles afire and clashed with police for about an hour leaving at least 10 people including four policemen and a photojournalist injured.

Blaming the accident on reckless driving and illegal roadside construction, the mob also damaged a few unauthorised roadside shops.

Road communications on Rajshahi-Chapainawabganj highway was snapped for three hours due to the violence.

The injured cops are constables Nuruzzaman, Abdul Baten, Anwar Hossain and Shahinur Rahman, while the journalist is Gulbar Hossain Jewel of local daily Upochar, said police.

Witnesses said the accident occurred when a Rajshahi-bound bus in its bid to overtake another rammed into the brick-laden standing truck around 1:30pm.

Hearing a bang, hundreds of people rushed to the scene and found the boys dead, said witness Tamim Hossain.

According to family sources, the two students were on their way to a tutor’s house after taking an examination at the school.

As the truck tried to flee the scene, locals chased it some 50 yards down the road and torched it.

Law enforcers reached the spot to defuse the violence but the mob clashed with them. They pelted cops with brickbats while police lobbed about 10 tear gas canisters to disperse them.

Traffic resumed on the highway around 5:00pm after acting mayor Shariful Islam Babu of Rajshahi City Corporation assured the agitating locals of meeting their demands including setting up a speed breaker on the spot and removal of illegal roadside shops within 24 hours.

Autopsies were carried out on the two bodies at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital morgue, said the officer-in-charge of Rajpara Police Station.

The bodies were handed over to the family members of the victims.

The process of lodging a case in this regard was underway.

Meanwhile, locals vandalised a bus after it killed a schoolgirl on Siraj-ud-Doula Road in Chittagong city yesterday morning.
