2023: Textile industry paralyzed by wage agitation

Before the initial proposal, leaders of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) held a meeting where the ordinary members expressed their ability to pay minimum wage of Taka 12,000.

There would have been a different scenario if the apex body of apparel exporters had proposed the same figure during initial talks with workers.

However, the workers’ agitation continued even after the minimum wage was fixed at Taka 12,500. In such a backdrop, the owners as well as the government resorted to factory closures, lawsuits and arrests to counter the protests.

At least 20,000 people, including named and unidentified activists, have been accused in 43 cases registered in Ghazipur and Ashulia on charges of vandalism, arson and looting. A total of 114 people have also been arrested under the cases.
