AI art gained wide popularity in 2022. With the sudden explosion of Dal-E2 in early November, people began to look further into AI art.
Art created through artificial intelligence has been around since the 1990s, but Dall-E 2 is something different. Its ability to create unique yet ultra-realistic art fascinates everyone. All the user has to do is give a hint in the box, and the AI will create a unique art piece following the prompt within a minute.
Unsurprisingly, the issue of AI raises the key question – who is the artist here? Is it the people who developed the program? Is this the same person who indicated? Or is the AI itself responsible for its creation?
Everyone will have different views. However, in my view, the artist is the AI itself, as a teacher at Jahangirnagar University helped me to conclude.
The logic behind this is simple. Think of an artist. An artist, as a human being, is born to his parents. Without their parents, they would not exist. Likewise, without the creators of Dull-E2, the program would not exist. Also, an artist creates art by gathering information or inspiration from their surroundings. It is impossible for a work of art to have no outside influence in any way. Even if it is non-representational art of Frank Stella, it was seen, felt or thought in one way or another. This is similar to the prompt you need to input in order to get the AI to generate the art.
This is why, in my opinion, AI is the artist behind the art. This understanding also shows that an artist does not necessarily have to be human.
But the findings raise even more questions about the value of art, the artist, and our relationship with both.
