Ahead of the awards, French Culture Minister Rachida Dati condemned the “collective blindness” that has lasted “for years” in the industry in an interview with the magazine Le Film Français. Of Godrecht he said, “Creative freedom is absolute, but here we're not talking about art, we're talking about pedophilia.”

Godreche, 51, has claimed that Doillon, 79, took advantage of her when he directed her in one of his films when she was 15 years old. She has also accused Jacquot of raping her during a six-year-long relationship, which began when she was 14 and he was 25 years her senior.

French cinema has been rocked by accusations that it ignored sexism and sexual exploitation for decades, and criticism that the art has long provided cover for abuse.

Screen legend Gerard Depardieu, 75, has been accused of rape and more than a dozen women have accused him of sexual harassment and assault. He has denied the allegations.

President Emmanuel Macron faced criticism for comments defending the actor, saying he had become the target of a “manhunt”.
