After Delhi, Sheikh Hasina to visit Beijing: An attempt at diplomatic balance

There was speculation that the Hasina-Modi summit might not happen in June. Many aides of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had said that the New Delhi visit would happen after the Beijing visit. Many even came to the conclusion that Narendra Modi last visited Dhaka in 2021, while Sheikh Hasina came to India on a bilateral visit in 2022 and then on a special invitation to attend the G20 summit in 2023. Therefore, this time Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Dhaka first. But, many people started forgetting that Indian Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra had come to Dhaka last May to discuss preparations for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's Delhi visit.

Diplomatic sources in Dhaka said the bilateral meeting of the two prime ministers will reiterate the political commitment to further strengthen the friendly relations between the two countries over the past 15 years. No significant announcement of any new decisions, signing of agreements and memoranda and inauguration of any project is expected during the visit. Mainly, they will hold the first formal meeting on bilateral relations after elections in both countries.

Sources said that preparations are underway on both sides regarding the agenda of the visit. During this visit, several agreements and memorandums of understanding (MoUs) are expected to be signed between the two countries, including signing of an agreement on a new framework to accelerate the implementation of India's loan assistance, as well as signing of a memorandum of understanding to ensure the supply of essential goods to Bangladesh under any circumstances. Apart from this, many issues including economic operations, trade, connectivity, Teesta deal, fuel, border killings, defense and new technology can be discussed in the bilateral meeting, although the number of deals and MoUs may decrease shortly before the visit.
