Late Chittaranjan Shaha started Ekushey book fair in 1972 with only 32 books. But that was only the beginning, now Ekushey Book fair is the biggest book fair of the country. This year’s fair has 630 stalls and 425 publishers and organizations are participating. Beside this there is a little magazine Chattar. Some media, social and cultural academy, NGOs and govt. departments are also participating in this fair. Nation is celebrating 60 years of language movement this year and Bangla Academy will arrange some special program including memorial lecture on fair premises.
Some stalls for the fair are still under construction and now there are only two archways for entrance. Attendants of the book stalls are saying apparently there are many visitors but only few of them are buying books, most of them are collecting book lists (catalog) from stalls. They are hoping more visitors will visit the fair as day progress.
