Mahmud Hasan Ripon, the ruling Awami League candidate for the Gaibandha-5 constituency, won the by-election two and a half months after it was suspended due to widespread irregularities.
According to the returning officer Faridul Islam, the former Bangladesh Chhatra League president got 78,276 votes, while his nearest rival Jatiya Party’s Ghulam Shahid Ranju got 44,950 votes.
Voting was held from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm on Wednesday through 952 electronic voting machines at 145 polling stations in the constituency with 339,000 voters, affecting early voting amid severe cold. As the day progressed, voters started queuing up.
