Awareness of media urged to curb violence against women

Speaker of the national parliament advocate Abdul Hamid has said more awareness of media is needed to curb violence against women. He said this in the inauguration ceremony of sixteen day long program to raise awareness on violence against women issue. This program is jointly organized by United Nations population fund and parliament secretariat. Speaker Abdul Hamid was the chief guest there.

Speaker Abdul Hamid also said that violence against women is a widely discussed issue. Scale of the problem is different in different countries due to socio socioeconomic inequality in different countries. But this problem is prevalent in every country. This problem is also important for Bangladesh as half of the population here is women.

The speaker of the parliament said United Nations and other development partners are working on this for about ten years. Bangladesh is committed to stop violence against women. The government has taken many steps including enactment of new law. Human rights can’t be ensured without ensuring rights of women. We need to ask ourselves, how many fundamental rights for women we have been able to ensure till today.

Speaker said, the media should not concentrate on victim, rather they should eye on the perpetrators, who have violated rights for women.

Other leaders of the parliament, ambassador from Spain and UN official spoke on the occasion.
