Bangladesh beat New Zealand by 9 runs in the 1st match of 5 match Micromax ODI series in Dhaka Mirpur Stadium. Sakib Al Hasan once again gifted Bangladesh another win against New Zealand this time by playing some extremely all round cricket with bat and ball.
Winning the toss Bangladesh elected to bat first and started quite well by the openers Sharhriar Nafees and Imrul Kayees. All the top four batsmen started quite well but Sakib Al Hasan who just came back from Worcestershire after playing some good county cricket was the man to lead the innings towards a respectable total.<!–more–> He scored 58 runs from just 51 balls with 8 boundaries and Bangladesh reached 228 in 49.3 over before they were all out.
Chasing a total of 229 New Zealand openers were very aggressive right from the beginning while Brendon Mccullum played a blinder innings of 61 from just 45 balls. The game looked like completely out of the reach for Bangladesh. But Ryder, Watling, Mccullum and Eliot fall in a very quick succession. The rain had stopped the game when Kiwis were 85/4 after 15 over.
After the rain the game started with new calculation with reduced over according to the law of Duck worth Lewis system. The target set for New Zealand was 210 from 37 over.
Daniel Vettory and Rose Taylor fought for a while and made an important partnership of 50 runs before the skipper was picked up by Nayeem Islam.
Nathan Mccullum and Kyle mills tried their best to reach the target but Bangladeshi bowlers made it almost impossible for them. Sakib took 4 wickets for 41 runs and Nayeem took 2 important wickets too while skipper Mashrafee only managed to bowl 1 over before he got injured. Bangladeshi camp is delighted with the win but also worried about the injury of Mashrafee.
Sakib al Hasan said in the post match presentation ceremony that, ‘We batted well at the start, kept losing wickets but we thought we had a decent total. Our bowlers bowled really well, the rain went in our favour but our bowlers bowled in good areas. Today was my day but others supported me, it was a team effort. Not sure on Mashrafe, Nazmul is injured too so both our fast bowlers are injured.’
Vettory said, ‘We had a reasonable start, to restrict them to 230 was a good effort. We expected to win, but we let ourselves down in the second half of our batting effort. Brendon played really well, he gave us impetus but we couldn’t back him up.’ The second ODI will be played in the same ground in 8th October.
