BNP considers upazila elections a trap

A source in top BNP officials said the issue of upazila elections was discussed during a meeting of party acting president Tariq Rehman with divisional organizing secretaries and assistant organizing secretaries.

During the meeting, almost all the party leaders expressed their opinion to boycott the upcoming upazila elections. BNP General Secretary Mirza Fakhrul Alamgir also attended the meeting. Later, the upazila election issue was also discussed in the party's standing committee meeting.

The Standing Committee, which is the highest decision-making body of the party, later decided to take the decision after further discussion.

No leader at the policy making level of BNP wanted to talk on this issue. A member of the standing committee, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Prothom Alo, “Many people might want to participate in the elections but how can we participate! We boycotted the election which changes the government but now how can we join other elections.
