Leaders and activists carried placards calling for the release of Khaleda Zia, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Mirza Abbas from jail. Overall, there was a festive atmosphere in the function.

The rally is being organized to protest against the increase in prices of fuel and other daily necessities, police brutality against BNP leaders and activists, as well as the release of Khaleda. The rally in Dhaka punctuated the BNP’s nationwide anti-government campaign.

Soleman Bepari, a Shramik Dal member from Narayanganj, said, “Despite all the drama in the past few days, the government and the police have not been able to thwart our rally.”

“Our general secretary has been arrested, our central office has been raided by the police, leaders and workers have been arrested. But they could not stop us,” he said.

Soleman said that he and many others faced many hurdles to reach the venue from Narayanganj. “Our cars were often stopped and searched. We had to keep track of where we were going, why and so on. Still, we came right into the rally. No one could stop us.
