The BNP threatened on Wednesday to announce tougher programs if the government did not allow its ailing party chief Khaleda Zia to travel abroad for advanced treatment.

“The people of Bangladesh will not remain silent if immediate steps are not taken to ensure the treatment of our leader Begum Khaleda Zia abroad,” senior BNP leader Amir Khosru Mahmood Chowdhury said.

Speaking at Milad and Doa Mehfil, the BNP leader also said that his party has a scheduled protest program on August 19. “Later, strict programs can be announced to demand treatment of our leader if needed. Everyone should be ready for this.

Khaleda’s life must be saved to restore democracy, human rights, rule of law and people’s right to vote in Bangladesh, he said. “The whole country is now moving in that direction. I am sure we will be able to free our leader (Khaleda) and ensure her treatment so that she can return to the political arena.”
