BNP sources said the upazila council elections were also discussed at the standing committee meeting on Monday, with members expressing mixed reactions over participation and boycott in the upcoming local government elections.

Many members advised to maintain a strategic position and in that situation, the party would neither encourage anyone to participate in the elections nor take a strict organizational stand against anyone participating in the elections.

However, the majority of members said that since the Supreme Court Bar Council election was not conducted fairly, participating in any election under this government would yield nothing but repeated deception.

Speaking about this, Amir Khasru Mahmood Choudhary refused to call for any elections under this Awami League government.

“Despite being in power, the Awami League is in a fragile state,” he told Prothom Alo. For this reason, they criticize BNP all the time. Our participation in this election will provide relief to them. That is why he has withdrawn his election symbol from the elections.”
