Earlier this month, two Myanmar Rohingya activist groups said 20 people died of hunger or thirst on a boat carrying at least 100 people, possibly off the coast of India, before drifting into Malaysian waters. Stuck for two weeks.
There was no immediate reaction from India’s Coast Guard. The UNHCR said it was a different boat to the one carrying the 180.
The International Organization for Migration said on Monday that 57 Rohingya landed in Indonesia’s Aceh Besar district on December 25. It said the boat, carrying only men and boys, is believed to have left Bangladesh and wandered for about a month.
Indonesian officials did not respond to a request for comment.
Two boats carrying a total of 230 Rohingya refugees, including women and children, washed up off the coast of Indonesia’s Aceh province in November, while the Sri Lankan Navy rescued 104 Rohingya this month.
“Life in the camp is full of uncertainties, there is no hope that they can go back home anytime soon,” said Mohd Imran, a former leader of the Rohingya community who returned to Bangladesh from Malaysia.
