Dhaka Airport’s Name Changed: ‘Zia International Airport’ replaced by ‘Shah Jalal Airport’

Dhaka News: Dhaka’s Zia International Airport’s name has been changed. The new name of the Airport is Hajarat Shah Jalal International Airport. Beside this, the name of some other institutions have also been changed which were taken by BNP-Jamayat coalition government. Main opposition party Bangladesh Nationalist Party gave veto on this decision of the government. And they have decided to go for protest now.  The decision was taken in 15th February 2010 at a cabinet meeting in Prime Minister’s office in Dhaka. After the program Prime Minister’s Press secretary talked with journalists that the decision was taken by the order of court. In 1979, the name of this Airport was Dhaka International Airport. In 1981, that name was changed. This name has been chosen by matching with the other Airports’ name of Bangladesh. Port city Chittagong Airport’s name is Shah Amanat International Airport, Razshahi Airport’s name is Shah Mokhdum Airport, and proposed Khulna Airport’s name is Khan Jahan Ali Airport. All of these name are belongs to some of the greatest priests of the country.

The deletion of the name of Ziaur Rahman made Bangladesh Nationalist Party angry against the government. Ziaur Rahman was the founder of Bangladesh Nationalist Party and he was also president of Bangladesh government.  Senior joint general secretary of BNP Mirja Fokhrul Islam said that, Awami league government has insulted freedom fighters with this decision as Ziaur Rahman was a freedom fighter in the liberation war 1971. He also said that BNP would go for protest against this decision and take some work schedule for this issue.
