Zafarullah, 81, had been suffering from kidney complications for a long time and various complications of old age recently. Due to deteriorating condition, Dr. Zafarullah was admitted to Gonostha Nagar Hospital on Wednesday. He was put on life support system on Monday.
Dr Zafarullah was a vascular surgeon and public health expert. During the Liberation War in 1971, Zafarullah and others established the Bangladesh Hospital in India for wounded freedom fighters and refugees. In 1982, Dr. Zafrullah was the leader behind the formulation of the Bangladesh National Drug Policy.
He established the Gonosthasthya Kendra in 1972 to treat the underprivileged.
