Police have arrested a student of Dhaka University (DU) in connection with the murder of a youth two years back. The DU student was traced with the help of a mobile phone number.
The arrested 26-year-old Sheikh Maruf Hussain alias Sujan is a third year student in the Department of Political Science in DU. He is also the vice-president of the Surja Sen Hall unit of the Bangladesh Students League.
On 1 June 2021, several youths admitted an unconscious youth named 32-year-old Abul Hasan to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). The young man died on the same day. Abul Hasan’s father Abdul Matin has registered a case of unnatural death at Shahbag police station.
Recently, after getting the post mortem report of Abul Hasan, the police came to know that it was not an unnatural death. He was actually killed. Abul Hasan was an employee of a mobile servicing shop in the capital’s Eastern Mallika Market. He is a resident of Laxmipur Sadar. He lived with his family in a house on Elephant Road in the city.
Investigation sources said that Abul Hasan used to take drugs and one evening in the last week of May 2021, he went to Neelkhet area adjacent to DU campus to take drugs. There he got into a fight with Maroof and two of his friends, Tariqul Islam (Tariq) and Rajeev Hussain. In a sequel to that incident, Maroof and two of his friends attacked Abul Hasan in the Suhrawardy Udyan area a week later. Among the attackers, Tariqul was also a DU student. All three took the seriously injured Abul Hasan to DMCH.
