Empowering Women with Disabilities: Legal Framework and Development Initiatives

Monsur Ahmed Chowdhury, trustee of Impact Foundation Bangladesh, said there should be political commitment to the development of people with disabilities. A national overview committee for the development of persons with disabilities was formed in 2008. The committee remained active until 2016.

He said, “Why is there no trace of that committee now? Any person can face disability at any point of time in his life. Therefore, no one should ignore persons with disabilities.”

Disability Service and Information Centre executive director Khondokar Johurul Alam said the power that the National Coordination Committee for Women with Disabilities has also needs to be implemented.

Among others present on the occasion were Ayesha Akhter, Legal Specialist (Gender Justice and Women Empowerment) at BLAST, Farzana Reza, National Programme Officer at International Labour Organisation, Ghulam Faruk Hamim, Head of Bangladesh Programme Team at ADD International Bangladesh, Nafisur Rahman, Disability and Development Advisor, Nazma Ara Begum, Programme Support Officer at UN Women Bangladesh, Nasima Akhter, Chairperson of National Council of Women with Disabilities, Iftekhar Mahmud, Director of B-Scan, Dewan Mahfuz A Moula, Consultant and Communication Manager at CBM Global Bangladesh and Farzana Naznin Tultul, Deputy Director at National Human Rights Commission.

Pratham Alo Associate Editor Abdul Qayoom delivered the inaugural address at the roundtable, which was moderated by Pratham Alo Assistant Editor Feroz Chaudhry.
