“It is paramount to understand the current state of the team and chart a path toward our desired goals,” Kirsten said.

“Winning global events, while challenging, is an important objective.

“Whether it is the upcoming tournament in June or future events, achieving success at these competitions would be a remarkable achievement.”

49-year-old Gillespie played 71 Tests and 97 ODI matches in his illustrious career for Australia.

He coached Yorkshire to win the English County Championship in 2014 and 2015.

Gillespie said, “Leading the Pakistan cricket team is a huge achievement for any coach given its rich heritage and passionate fan base.”

“I understand there will be expectations and it comes with the role. All I can do is take it in my stride and if I didn't think I could deal with it I wouldn't have taken the job.”
