The gas crisis in the Chattogram region turned serious when the gas supply from the floating LNG terminal at Maheshkhali in Cox’s Bazar stopped due to a technical fault around 10:00 pm on Thursday night. Although the supply started after the terminal fault was fixed around 10:30 pm on Friday night, the situation has still not returned to normal.

The gas crisis in the eastern region is prevalent in Chattogram, which is under the jurisdiction of Karnaphuli Distribution Company (KGDCL), and Cumilla, Noakhali, Feni and Lakshmipur districts which are under Bakharabad Gas Distribution Company. Apart from this, Narayanganj which comes under Titus Gas has also been hit by this crisis. A major portion of the LNG is supplied to the national grid as well as to these districts.

Not only the Chattogram region, gas supply in other parts of the country is also much less than the normal quantity. As a result, many families are unable to light stoves and long queues of vehicles have formed in front of many CNG stations. Sanaul Rabbi, professor and head of the department of petroleum and mining engineering at Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology, advised alternative measures to prevent such disasters.
