Dhaka is a city which has 400 years of age and a lot of history behind it. Different types of culture and heritage mixed up here to develop this city. Therefore, Dhaka city inherited a lot of historical places time to time. Here we have tried to present some of those historical places which have great history behind it.
Dhaka’s first mosque: Binot Bibi’r Mosque
The mosque was built almost 152 years before Dhaka was established as a capital of Subah Bangla. It is situated at Narinda of Dhaka city. The daughter of Marhamat, Musammat Bakht binot built this mosque in 1456 AD. As the first Islam taking person is Woman, the first mosque of Dhaka is also a woman. The mosque has been reinforced and reshaped to enlarge the size. But the name is still remaining as Binot Bibir Masjid. The government Archeology department did not take necessary steps to protect it properly. Nasiruddin Mahmud Shah was the emperor of this region when the mosque was built. Islamic calligraphy is written in the wall of the mosque. It seems that the mosque is still telling the golden proud of Dhaka.
National memoriam
National memoriam is one of the architectures of national proud. This is starts to build in 16th December, 1972 by taking 84 acres of land. The work of mass graves, Halipad, parking space, floor and road was done in between the period of 1975-1982 which cost 37.7 million taka. The work of main memorial, artificial lake, green circle and office was done by the design of architect Syed Moinul Hossain which cost 8486.5 million taka. The main architecture is 150 feet in high and 130 feet in wide. There are seven arms which indicates seven great freedom fighters. The theme is ‘unnato momo shir’ which indicates ‘great is my head’. The main monument is maid by concrete. There is a plan of another project which will have museum, mosque and library on another 126 acre of land. This is situated at savar. Although it is just outside of Dhaka city but it carries a lot of unmixed emotion and respect of whole nation.
National mosque of Bangladesh: Baitul Mukarram
The national mosque of Bangladesh is Baitul Mukarram. The theme of making such a big mosque was first introduced by Abdul Latif Ibrahim Baoani. By his theme ‘Baitul Mokarram Society’ was formed in 1959. The civil work of the mosque started in 27th January, 1960. The mosque is situated in between Old Dhaka and New Dhaka which is also the centre of trade and commerce too. The architect of the mosque complex is T Abdul Hussain Thariany. The architectural art of the mosque is combined with tradition and modernization.
Bahadur Shah Park
Bahadur Shah Park is greatest memories of Dhaka’s proud and sacrifice as a capital. It is imaging the memory of first anti colonialism war against British in 1857. In eighteenth century, the Armenian used to play Billiard here. It was known as ‘Antaghor’. In nineteenth century, British changed the name into Victoria Park. In twentieth century, the name finally converted into Bahadur Shah Park. At the time of mass revelation, there were two unit of Army in 73 no infantry. In 22 November, the army of Lalbagh fort and local treasury were attacked. Some innocent Bengal army was killed there. In 1958, when the queen Victoria took the power from East India Company, the place was named by her. Then in 1957, it was named finally when the hundred years of mass revelation was celebrated. Bahadur Shah was the last Mughoul Emperor.
Memorial of three national leaders:
The memorial of three national leaders situated at the western part of Shohroardy Park or beside the Shishu Academy. The three leaders are great national hero Abul kashem Fazlul haque, Hossain Shahid Shohroardy and Khaja Nazimuddin. Masud Ahmed is the architect of this beautiful memorial. The three leaders have a great contribution for the evolution and prosperity of the country.
