The air quality in India’s financial hub Mumbai on Thursday was worse than smog-laden national capital New Delhi, raising concerns of long-term health risks for people living in the country’s two highly populated cities.

Government data showed Mumbai’s air quality was “very poor” and was expected to remain so for the next two or three days.

According to a federal government website that charts air quality in Indian cities, residents were advised to stay indoors and avoid long walks.

A government official, who did not wish to be named, said emissions from several infrastructure projects and nearby refineries were possible reasons, as he was not authorized to speak to the media.
