less exports
Maharashtra will produce a record 13.7 million tonnes in 2021/22, higher than an initial estimate of 11.2 million tonnes, allowing New Delhi to export a record 11.2 million tonnes.
But this year, sugar production in Maharashtra and neighboring Karnataka was revised upwards and India will not be allowed to export the excess sugar demanded by the industry, said a Mumbai-based dealer of a global trading firm.
As the sugar export quota was almost exhausted, the Indian Sugar Mills Association and other trade bodies were requesting the government to allow additional exports of up to 4 million tonnes.
The dealer said, “The industry was depending on higher production in Maharashtra to persuade the government for higher exports. But instead of increasing, Maharashtra’s production is going down.”
India mainly exports sugar to Indonesia, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Sudan, Somalia and United Arab Emirates.
