The West Bank, areas where Palestinians seek statehood, has seen an increase in violence since US-backed peace talks with Israel in 2014.
Tensions have risen following an intensification of raids by Israel in response to a spate of attacks on Palestinian streets in their cities last year.
A Palestinian motorist who said he witnessed Sunday’s shooting described the first flare-up of anger at the checkpoint, with drivers impatiently honking while they waited.
Maher Hadid, a 37-year-old motorist, said: “The army fired stun grenades and one grenade hit the man’s (Kahleh’s) car and the man started shouting at the soldiers.” They were manhandled and shot, Hadid said.
