The Padma Bridge would not be named after any particular person, Communication Minister Obaidul Quader has said.

He said this while addressing a rally at the Central Shaheed Minar in the capital on Monday organised by ruling Awami League’s student body Bangladesh Chhatra League, BSS reported.

Quader said: “The Padma Bridge will not be named after any particular person. It will be called Padma Bridge.”

Responding to the suggestion that the bridge could be named after Begum Fajilatunnessa Mujib, he said: “This is a grand idea, as this great lady sacrificed a lot for the country and in return took nothing.

“But the decision of Bangabandhu’s daughters, Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana, is to name it simply ‘Padma Bridge.’”

The 6.15km-long bridge, to be built over the Padma river in Mawa-Jajira point, would cost Tk20,507 crore.
