Green Bay Packers Quarterback Jordan Love Exits Season Opener with Late-Game Injury in Loss to Eagles
Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love was unable to finish Friday’s season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles after suffering an apparent lower left leg injury in the final seconds of a 34-29 defeat in São Paulo. With just six seconds remaining, Love went down and required assistance to reach the sidelines. He later needed further help from head athletic trainer Nate Weir and running back Josh Jacobs to walk to the locker room.
Though Love appeared to be moving slightly better post-game, head coach Matt LaFleur was unable to provide any updates on the quarterback’s condition, responding to inquiries with, “I don’t know.” Love did not address the media following the game.
“We know what kind of guy he is, how he approaches everything,” wide receiver Christian Watson commented. “Whatever it is, I know he’s going to get through it. We’re going to get through it.”
The injury occurred as Love was leading a final drive to rally the Packers. After a 33-yard completion to Jayden Reed brought the Packers to their 49-yard line, Love was hit by Eagles defenders Jalen Carter and Josh Sweat on the following play. While falling, Love appeared to twist his leg but managed to flip the ball to Jacobs before going down.
Backup quarterback Malik Willis, acquired via trade last week from the Tennessee Titans, stepped in for the final two plays—an incompletion and a sack. The only other quarterback under contract with the Packers is Sean Clifford, re-signed to the practice squad after being cut last month.
Love’s injury marked a disappointing end to his first regular-season game since signing a four-year, $220 million contract extension on July 26, making him the NFL’s highest-paid player. He finished the game 17-of-34 for 260 yards, with two touchdowns and one interception.
“That’s the franchise right there,” said defensive lineman Kenny Clark. “Hopefully, he can be back next week and be all right.”
