Number of HIV infected people in Bangladesh is low compared to other countries of the region. But southern district Khulna is facing some challenges. Neighboring India has relative higher HIV infection rate and this has contributed in the increment of AIDS patients. Moreover number of sex worker, homosexuals and drug addict have increased in recent years.
Khulna has eighty AIDS patients and twenty eight of them is diagnosed only this year, which is an alarming sign.
Government hospitals do HIV test, they charge fourteen hundred taka for this; but they do not provide any special care for the patients. The patients are referred to private hospitals and NGOs.
AIDS cannot be cured and death is obvious. Retroviral drugs are used for treatment of AIDS patients. These drugs are expensive but buy some years.
Some NGOs are providing free treatment and trying to raise awareness.
