The pressure continued to mount during the week after FIFA launched disciplinary proceedings against Rubiales and Hermoso said in a statement that such acts “should never be punished”.
As backlash mounted, Rubiales, who initially called his critics “idiots,” issued a video apology late Monday, but it failed to quell the uproar.
An RFEF spokesman declined to comment.
A source told Reuters that regional leaders of the RFEF held a crisis meeting in Madrid on Thursday to discuss Rubiales’ future and options for a possible successor.
