The FIFA fan area in Asian Town, where many expatriate workers have living quarters, is one of the few public places in Doha that show World Cup games on large outdoor screens.
Most of the men come out in the evening to sit on the grass or in the bleachers at the cricket stadium where fan zones have been set up, but the early morning starts see many go to bed before the final whistle.
Many workers are dependent on their employers for permission to stay in Qatar and the goal is to ensure they can stay employed.
Jonathan, another Ugandan, isn’t really a fan of his job as a mechanic and would love to get an education, but he’s aiming to be here long after the finals.
“I will stay here until my contract runs out,” he said.
