It said Moroccan armed forces would deploy rescue teams to provide clean drinking water, food supplies, tents and blankets to affected areas.

Turkey, where a powerful earthquake in February killed more than 50,000 people, was among the countries to express solidarity and offer aid.

Algeria, which cut ties with Morocco in 2021 after tensions between the countries escalated centered on the Western Sahara conflict, said it would open airspace to humanitarian and medical flights.

The earthquake was recorded at a depth of 18.5 km, which was typically more destructive than deeper earthquakes of similar intensity. According to the US Geological Survey, it was Morocco’s deadliest earthquake since 1960, when the earthquake was estimated to have killed at least 12,000 people.
