The Agricultural Marketing Act specified profit margins for each level of the supply chain, and the department prepared price charts accordingly.

For example, the production cost of beef is 588 taka per kilogram. The department estimated reasonable profits and some additional costs and fixed the selling price at Tk 605 per kg at the production level. The price at wholesale level will be Tk 532 and at retail level it will be Tk 664.

But now each kg beef is being sold in the market for 730 to 780 taka.

The department issued a notice on its website on Friday urging sellers to maintain the price chart. Further, he informed the concerned officials and stakeholders including Agriculture Secretary, Commerce Secretary, Directorate of Consumer Rights Protection, two municipal corporations, Competition Commission, all Deputy Commissioners and District Superintendents of Police.
