Overcoming the speech impediment: The inspiring success story of Sajib, a skilled worker in a bag production factory

A large number of Dhaka’s low-income people live in the Kamarangirchar area on the banks of the Buriganga River. Passing through the streets of Huzurpara in Kamarangirchar, we reached a small factory where shopping bags are produced. There were rows of colorful tissue shopping bags coming out of the machine.

One of the four machines of this factory was being driven by a young man named Mohammad Sajib. He was completely engrossed in his work at that time. He was explaining the work in sign language to the assistant standing next to him.

Sajib actually communicates in sign language as he has been suffering from hearing and speech impairment since childhood. Despite this handicap, he has excelled in his work skills.

We visited Maca Plastic & Rubber Industries to know the incredible success story of Sajib. Twenty year old Shojib is working as a machine operator in this factory.

Sajib joined the factory as an assistant machine operator about four years ago at a salary of Tk 7,500 per month. He was promoted within just one year of starting the job. Everyone at the factory admires his skill level.
