Prominent Indian musician Pandit Ravi Shankar breathed his last early today in a hospital of California. He was ninety two.
He was considered as sitar maestro. Usually style of music in the east and west are different. But Pandit Ravi Shankar
entranced the western audience also.
Beatles musician George Harrison was his follower. They arranged a concert ‘Concert for Bangladesh’ to raise money for
Bangladesh in 1971. It was first of its kind.
Ravi Shankar learned sitar from Ustad Allauddin Khan another noted musician of the subcontinent.
Ravi Shankar directed music in many of Satyajit Ray’s film including, ‘Pather Panchali’, ‘Aparajito’ and ‘Apur Sansar’. His
composition in Pather Panchali’ was praised by music lovers which had a cathartic effect.
Ravi Shankar was born in 1920. His father was born in present Bangladesh. Bangladeshis will always remember him for his
contribution. His concert for Bangladesh not only raised money for Bangladesh but also raised public opinion against mass
killings in Bangladesh at that time.
