Rahul Gandhi reinstated in Parliament after Supreme Court suspends defamation sentence

India’s top court on Friday suspended Gandhi’s defamation sentence, saying a preliminary hearing had failed to justify imposing the maximum sentence for his campaign rally comments four years ago.

Justice BR Gavai, in his judgement, said, “Pending the finality, there is a need to stay the order of conviction.”

Gandhi is the scion of India’s prominent political dynasty and the son, grandson and great-grandson of former prime ministers from independence leader Jawaharlal Nehru.

The Congress was once the dominant force in Indian politics, but Gandhi himself has lost two elections to Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party after emerging as a prince far removed from the concerns of ordinary Indians.
