However, multiple sources in BGMEA have confirmed two incidents of theft in 2019. The next year it increased to nine. There have been 22 such incidents in the first seven months of last year. At the same time, 20-25 thefts have taken place so far in the current year. This indicates an increase in the incidents of theft. Most of the garment factories send their garments in hired covered vans to various container depots in Chattogram.
Accompanied by some covered van drivers, a group of miscreants snatched readymade garments by stopping the vehicles at various points on the Dhaka-Chattagram highway including Chandina, Feni, Mirsarai, and Sitakunda. When the number of theft incidents on the highways increased, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan met leaders of BGMEA as well as top officials of law and order enforcement agencies in July last year. In that meeting, it was decided to strengthen goods transport security and install CCTVs on the roads. Even after 18 months have passed, that decision has not yet been implemented.
