The 46th birth anniversary of Sheikh Russel, the youngest son of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was observed today across the country through various programmes. Nine-year-old Sheikh Russel was killed brutally along with Bangabandhu by a section of derailed army officers on the black night of August 15, 1975. Bangladesh Awami League and other socio- cultural organisations held different programmes to observe the birth anniversary of Russel. The programmes included offering of Fateha and special munajat, placing of wreaths at the grave of Resell and organizing discussions, painting competitions and cultural programmes. The day’s programmes began with hoisting of the national flag at 7 in the morning at the central office of Sheikh Russel Jatiya Shishu-Kishore Parishad in the city. Different political, social, cultural, student and professional organizations paid their rich tribute by placing floral wreaths at the graves of all martyrs of august 15, including Sheikh Resell at Banani. Sheikh Russel Jatiya Shishu-Kishore Parishad organized the main programme of the day that included discussion, painting and cultural competition and prize distribution among the meritorious students at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the city at 10 am. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the eldest sister of Sheikh Russel spoke at the function. Presided over by chairman of the Parishad M Rakibur Rahman, the function was also addressed by State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Dr Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury, Janata Bank Chairman economist Dr Abul Barakat, Parishad’s secretary general Mahmud-uz-zaman, president of Nagar unit K M Shahidullah, general secretary M Mujibur Rahman and Sheikh Rehnuma Sraboni. Students who achieved outstanding results in the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations were awarded along with the winners of a painting and a cultural competition at the function. Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote placed wreaths at the graveyard of Russel and held a discussion meeting at its Gulshan office. Presided over by the president of the jote Tarana Halim, MP, the discussion meeting was also addressed by actor ATM Shamsuzzaman, Syed Hasan Imam, Pijush Bandopaddhya, Aruna Biswas and Arun Sarker Rana, among others. Bangladesh Nari Mukti Andolon also organized a discussion meeting to mark the day with its president Fatema Khatun in the chair at its office here. Historian Siraj Uddin Ahmed, Poet Nahid Roksana, Advocate Jannatul Ferdous, Farzana Yasmin Mukta, Nasima Akhter, Hawa Noor Banu, Shahina Khatun and Lita Begum spoke at the discussion meeting. Jatiya Ganotrantric League organized a discussion meeting at its office here to observe the day. President of the organization M A Jalil presided over the meeting while language hero Bahauddin Chowdhury spoke as the chief guest. Niaz Mohammad Khan, Mirpur thana Awami League leader ASM Mostofa Kamal, Chhatra League leader Mizanur Rahman Shahjahan, Jahanara Begum, Sarder Mohammad Ali Badal, Samir Ranjan Das and Harun Rashid Matubbar also spoke at the meeting. Awami Tarun League paid its rich tribute to the memories of Sheikh Russel by placing wreaths and offering fateha at his graveyard in the morning. Tarun League president M H Babul, general secretary Moslehuddin, vice president Rafiquzzaman Kiron, joint general secretaries Saiduzzaman Manik and Kabir Hossain, organizing secretary Rubel Ahmed, Zabed Iqbal, Yusuf Patwary and Habibur Rahman Habib were present on the occasion.
