When the temperature drops below 6 degrees in a significant area, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department defines it as a cold wave. If the temperature remains between 6-8 or 8-10 degree Celsius, they call them moderate or mild cold wave respectively.

Meteorologist Rashid said the temperature fell below 10 degrees Celsius at 16 BMD stations on Sunday, leaving hundreds of people in the country’s northwestern and central regions reeling under severe cold.

Light cold wave is continuing in Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions and Tangail, Faridpur and Aricha districts of Dhaka including Jashore, Kushtia and Satkhira of Khulna division.

Rashid predicted improvement around January 12, saying the current cold snap may continue for a few more days.
