The dark side of India’s film industry

Bollywood films have been synonymous with India’s soft power to influence neighboring countries. These Hindi films with singing and dancing with sexually suggestive scenes have been very popular in India and neighboring countries. These films also projected a secular India to the world, though India is currently ruled by Hindu fundamentalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which is notorious for its anti-Muslim agenda.

But recent unfortunate death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput (SSR) has uncovered a different Bollywood which was unknown to the outside world. It was questioned whether Sushant Singh Rajput’s death was suicide or killing. His girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty was detained for her alleged involvement in drug peddling and money embezzlement. She was later released on bail.

But many heavyweight actors, actress, directors, producer’s names were mention by Indian media. Allegations include drug trafficking, sexual harassment, and nepotism. Many of them were questioned by investigating officers. Actor Vivek Oberoi’s house was searched by central crime branch officials. A Whatsapp group for drug selling is revealed where many celebrities were member and popular actress Deepika Padukone was the administrator of that group.

Sara Ali Khan, Saonam Kapoor, Sonakshi Sinha, and many others have left social media, many have lost brand value. Alia Bhatt has lost sponsors because public relations officials are thinking these celebrities can no more influence consumers. 14th June to 14th September, during these four months, 75 percent of Bollywood news was related to Sushant Singh Rajput. That indicates how much Bollywood is struggling to fight back.
