Conflicts driving displacement include the war in Sudan, which Grandi described as “one of the most devastating wars” but has received less attention than other crises. Grandi said more than 9 million people are internally displaced and another 2 million have fled to neighbouring countries such as Chad, Egypt and South Sudan.
“There are hundreds of thousands of people coming every day,” he said, referring to the influx of people seeking safety in Chad.
Israel’s bombing and ground campaign in Gaza has left around 1.7 million people – around 80 percent of the Palestinian territory’s population – internally displaced, many of them multiple times.
