Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani retires from international football at the age of 37

Uruguay attacker Edinson Cavani announced the end of his international career on Thursday at the age of 37.

Known as “El Matador”, Cavani is Uruguay's second-highest goalscorer and third-most capped player, with 58 goals in 136 appearances.

“I have been and will always be blessed to have worn this shirt and represented what I love most in the world: my country,” he said in a message on social media dedicated to his “beloved Celeste” (the nickname for the Uruguay national team).

“I want to dedicate myself to this new phase of my career and put everything I have into getting where I need to be.
