US statement on Benazir, Aziz: Corruption undermines economic growth, weakens democracy

The United States has taken a strong stance against corruption, saying that it undermines economic growth, development, government, and democracy.

US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said this when asked about corruption allegations against former police chief Benazir Ahmed and army chief General (retired) Aziz Ahmed.

At the State Department's regular press briefing on Tuesday, a journalist drew the spokesperson's attention to recent media reports of large-scale corruption by a former Bangladesh police chief who is under US sanctions, and asked him whether any US agency had identified or frozen any of his assets.
