“We will not be attending the event in any capacity,” a US official told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity. The US boycott had not been previously reported.

Iran's mission to the United Nations in New York declined to comment.

Hardline Raisi, considered a potential successor to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, died on May 19 when his helicopter crashed in bad weather in the mountains near the Azerbaijan border.

“The United Nations should stand with the people of Iran, not remember their decades-old oppressors,” the US official said. “Raisi was involved in a number of horrific human rights abuses, including the extrajudicial killings of thousands of political prisoners in 1988.”
