According to local media, Cricket Australia said Khawaja was wearing the armband in line with a video recently shared on Instagram by Gaza children’s charity UNICEF.
In the post, Khawaja commented, “Don’t people care about innocent humans being killed?”
The war erupted after Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, killing 1,200 people.
Khawaja on Wednesday vowed to fight the ban on his footwear and doubled down on his stance just before going out to bat in the first Test.
“I think a lot has happened in the past that sets a precedent,” Khawaja told Fox Cricket.
“Other people who have religious things on their devices, that’s technically not allowed under the ICC guidelines, but the ICC never says anything on that,” he said.
