In an interview, former world chess champion Viswanathan Anand had said, “Niyaz Murshed was more talented than me. He could have made it this far if he hadn’t taken a break. Niyaz also regrets taking time out from chess. After becoming Grand Master, he took a break from chess and went abroad for higher studies. Because of this break, he could not become a Super Grand Master in Chess. Niaz, the first Grand Master from the Indian subcontinent, acknowledged the failure and shouldered some of the blame for the current state of chess in the country.
