Apple TV+’s 2022 slavery drama “Emancipation”, actor Will Smith’s first film since his famous slapping of comedian Chris Rock on stage at the Oscars, has received mixed early reviews from film critics.

The film holds a 59% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes so far, with 14 of 24 critics praising the film as of Thursday afternoon.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the film is based on the true 1863 story of a former slave named Gordon, who is called Peter in the film, and photographs of his battered back that depict the brutality of American chattel slavery. It is scheduled to hit the theaters on December 9.
