Today the 10th September is the world suicide prevention day. International Association for Suicide Prevention, World Health Organization and World Federation for Mental Health jointly host this day.
In every forty seconds a man or woman is committing suicide in the world. According to World Health Organization, one third of suicides are committed by using pesticides. Accesses to poison, firearm are some other contributing factors.
But in Bangladesh most of the suicides are committed by pesticides. Psychiatric disorder, drug addiction, hopelessness are the main causes for committing suicide.
From a scientific seminar held in National Mental Health Institute yesterday, experts emphasized on controlling the use of pesticides. They also said, Proper treatment for mental illness and drug addiction may curb the number.
Keeping the pesticides in safe hand and withdrawing harmful agents for human from pesticide is necessary to stop suicide here.
