Zampa hails ‘game changer’ Cummins after ‘axe’ threat in World Cup

“I heard last night that Pat Cummins would not be selected for this game,” Clarke said on Sky Sports Radio’s Big Sports Breakfast in Australia.
“If Pat Cummins is being dropped and is not captaining the team, then you guys have chosen the wrong captain.”

Before Monday, Cummins had overseen a six-wicket defeat to India, where his team was bowled out for just 199, and a 134-run loss to South Africa, their biggest defeat in a World Cup.

However, he put his critics in their place by dismissing both Sri Lankan openers Pathum Nissanka (61) and Kusal Perera (78) after putting on a 125-run first-wicket stand in Lucknow.

After this he ran out Dunith Velez with excellent fielding.

“That run-out, those little things can change the score from 260 to 210 and that’s the game. So he especially led from the front,” Zampa said after Australia chased 210 to win. “

“We all support each other 100 percent on this team, so I don’t really know what’s been said or what people are reading into it.”

He added, “There’s no pressure on Pat. We’ve got a really good feeling in the group in terms of supporting each other, looking after each other.”

On a day when rain, dust storms and strong winds added some much-needed drama to the contest, Zampa said he was relieved that no one was injured when scaffolding and hoardings from the roof of the Ekana Stadium fell onto the seats below.
