12th General Elections: Independent candidates defeat 3 State Ministers and 11 AL MPs

In Jashore-6 constituency, Awami League candidate Shaheen Chakladar was defeated by independent candidate Azizul Islam. Shaheen Chakladar is an outgoing MP and general secretary of Jashore District Awami League.

Former state minister Mehar Afroz is also among the outgoing Awami League MPs who lost the election. He lost the election from Ghazipur-5 constituency to independent candidate Akhtaruzzaman. Failing to secure nomination from the Awami League, former DACSU VP Akhtaruzzaman contested the elections as an independent candidate.

Former state minister and sitting MP from Jamalpur-4 constituency Murad Hasan also lost the election. However, this time he was an independent candidate and lost the election to Awami League nominated candidate Abdur Rasheed. Abdur Rashid is the former principal of Tejgaon College in the capital.

Apart from him, Zafar Alam, the sitting MP from Cox’s Bazar-1 constituency, has lost the election. This time he contested the elections as an independent candidate.

Another outgoing MP Mohammad Farhad Hussain has also lost the election from Brahmanbaria-1 constituency. He was defeated by independent candidate Syed AK Ekramuzzaman. He was expelled by the BNP for participating in the elections.
