Thirteen schoolchildren died in a dormitory fire in central China’s Henan province, the official Xinhua news agency reported on Saturday.
The fire at Yingcai School in Yanshanpu village, Henan, was reported to the local fire department at 11:00 pm (1500 GMT) on Friday, Xinhua said.
The news agency said 13 students were confirmed dead and one injured.
A school teacher told the state-run Hebei Daily that the victims were nine and 10-year-olds from the same third grade class.
“Rescuers immediately arrived at the scene and the fire was extinguished at 11:38 p.m.,” Xinhua said.
According to Xinhua, the injured survivor is “currently being treated in hospital and is in stable condition”.
