With the announcement of holidays in factories for the 13th Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliamentary) elections, a large number of working people have started returning to their villages.
With thousands of people going home at the same time, the traffic pressure on the Dhaka-Tangel and Dhaka-Mymensingh highways in Ghazipur has increased manifold. Intermittent traffic congestion is being created, causing serious hardship to homebound commuters.
Long queues of buses, trucks, cars and other vehicles were seen in Chandra, Safipur, Mauchak and Konabari areas of Ghazipur since Tuesday morning. The journey is taking many times longer than usual.
Rafiqul Islam, a garment worker traveling from Dhaka to Sirajganj, said, “I got leave from the factory to cast my vote. I left early in the morning, but after reaching Chandra area, I was stuck in traffic for about an hour. I don’t know when I will reach home.”
